Out on a Limb – My Journey from Orphan to Entrepreneur
Chapter 1: Thrown Away but Not Broken
At the age of three, my mother made a decision that would shape the rest of my life—she abandoned me to an orphanage. From that moment forward, I grew up without ever knowing the warmth of a home, the comfort of a mother’s embrace, or the guidance of a father. I was left to navigate the world without the foundation that most children take for granted. But even in those early years, I made a decision of my own: I would not let my circumstances define me. I would rise.
Chapter 2: A Childhood Without Excuses
Orphanages don’t teach love. They don’t nurture dreams. They teach survival. I learned quickly that no one was coming to rescue me, that life would not hand me favors, and that the only person responsible for my future was me. But rather than dwell on what I lacked, I chose to focus on what I could control. I never used my past as an excuse for failure. Instead, I used it as fuel for success.
Chapter 3: Stepping Into the Unknown
At 26, I entered the life insurance business, an industry I knew nothing about. No one handed me a roadmap, no one paved my way—I had to figure it out for myself. And I did. Not just adequately, but exceedingly well. Within a short time, I became the top salesperson in disability income sales nationwide. When it came to life insurance, I reached the prestigious Top of the Table, an elite group of producers recognized for their exceptional performance. My work ethic and determination set me apart, and success became my standard.
Chapter 4: Millionaire by 35
I set a goal: become a millionaire by 40. I reached it by 35. It wasn’t luck. It wasn’t handed to me. It was built, step by step, through relentless effort, smart decision-making, and the willingness to take risks when others hesitated. I lived by the philosophy: “If you are afraid to go out on a limb, you will never get the fruit. There is no failure except in no longer trying.”
Chapter 5: Building an Empire
With success in insurance, I didn’t stop there. I founded a healthcare administration company and a billing company, running them concurrently. These ventures taught me some of the most valuable lessons of my life—how to market, how to negotiate, how to hire and fire, and most importantly, how to lead.
One of my greatest strengths was negotiation. It was my job to secure health insurance rates for thousands of people, and I excelled at it. I also negotiated leases, striking deals that others thought impossible. Through it all, I never worked for anyone but myself after the age of 26. My independence was non-negotiable.
Chapter 6: The Principles That Guided Me
Over the years, I learned that success isn’t just about talent—it’s about mindset. It’s about perseverance, integrity, and knowing when to take risks. I believed in paying it forward, in helping those who were willing to work hard but lacked opportunity. I knew that failure was only real if you stopped trying.
Chapter 7: The Legacy I Leave Behind
I did not start life with advantages. I did not have a safety net. But I made something of myself through sheer will and determination. My story is not just about business; it is about resilience, about refusing to let circumstances dictate my future.
I hope my journey serves as a reminder that no matter where you come from, no matter what odds are stacked against you, success is possible. But only if you dare to go out on a limb and reach for it.
